United Nations agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are frustrating efforts to repatriate Somalia refugees.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery yesterday said the refugees were willing to go back to their country but the organisations were frustrating the efforts of transferring them.

“There are big wars there; otherwise many refugees are willing to go back, but the NGOs are not interested because they make a lot of money in the process,” said Mr Nkaisery.

At the same time, the CS said the Government and the Jubaland region administration had identified 1,000 hectares to build a refugee camp inside Somalia.

“The UN and other agencies have set aside Sh10.5 billion for the construction of a refugee camp that can accommodate 50,000 people near Ras Camboni. The building will include schools, health facilities and an airport,” Nkaissery told MPs. He was responding to a question from Parliament’s Administration and National Security Committee member Mohamed Diriye (Wajir South).
